May is coming — and you know what that means. Time to spam your Instagram and Facebook feeds with hilarious “it’s gonna be May” memes!
In case you’ve been living under a rock or, we don’t know, living in space, the meme is inspired by the 2000 ‘NSYNC pop hit, “It’s Gonna Be Me.” In the song, Justin Timberlake sings the word “me” in a way that sounds similar to “May.”
Since 2012, fans have been poking fun of the old song by putting the phrase “it’s gonna be May” on top of a picture of Justin. As the picture circled around Tumblr, and later Twitter and Facebook, it quickly became popular. Different versions started popping up in 2016 that included poems and even gifs of Justin busting out of a May calendar.
It became so big, it eventually reached Justin himself. In 2016, he tweeted, “Everybody… It is ACTUALLY GONNA BE MAY! #canyoumemeyourself Probably not, right?”
Although Justin was a good sport about being the butt of jokes, he later explained that the mispronunciation wasn’t entirely his fault.
“In my defense, [producer] Max Martin made me sing ‘me’ that way,” Justin said in 2016. “But thank you Max, because now we have the meme of the century.”
But the popularity of the Justin gag accidentally created a whole host of others. After all, May is an important month for most people. It usually means it’s the start of warm weather, sunshine, allergies (if you’re unlucky), and more. And all these things make perfect topic fodder for silly Internet pictures and gifs.
