Kidnapping survivor Michelle Knight, who was one of three women held captive in Ariel Castro’s Cleveland home for more than a decade, revealed she’s happily married. The 36-year-old — now known as Lily Rose — made the exciting announcement on Dr. Phil.
“It’s so good to see you… I got really good news for you,’ a healthy-looking Michelle said in an episode that will air later this month. “Dr. Phil, I’m married,” she confirmed, as the audience began cheering and clapping while being shown wedding photos of the couple onscreen.
A spokesperson for Dr. Phil told the Daily Mail that Michelle’s husband’s name is Mario and he’s 39 years old. They tied the knot in May 2015, two years after she was freed.
Back in 2015, Michelle revealed she had a boyfriend — aka Mario — and gushed about her man. “He’s such an amazing person,” she said of her beau. “He’s sweet-hearted. He’s right there with me all the time, and he supports everything that I do.” She added, “[I’m] looking forward to happiness, a future, a life I never had.”
On May 6, 2013, Michelle, Amanda Berry, and Gina Dejesus were freed from the “House of Horrors” after being held captive, raped, starved, and beaten for a decade by Ariel Castro — who was indicted on a total of 977 counts, including 512 counts of kidnapping, 446 counts of rape, and two counts of aggravated murder for termination of another’s pregnancy. Michelle was the only one of Castro’s victims to go to court and face the man who took away ten years of her life so she could testify against him. He later hung himself in his jail cell after he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Michelle’s been candid about her experience with Castro ever since her release and wrote a second book, Life After Darkness: Finding Healing and Happiness After the Cleveland Kidnappings. Prior to writing it, she said her second book would be different from her first memoir Finding Me. “It’s going to be about my future and how I triumphed against everything that happened to me and everything that was holding me down,” Michelle explained in 2015. “My fears and how I conquered them, because it’s really hard.”
Michelle’s episode of Dr. Phil airs April 24.
