Unzipped: How to.. take on autumnal tones in jacquard

The official start of Fall may have been weeks ago, but today is the first day I was able to comfortably wear a wool sweater. So I don’t know about you, but to me that counts as a major turning point in the season. That being said, it’s becoming much easier to shop for cold weather items and heavier fabrications hitting the market. In this case, we’ve got our eyes on ornate jacquards.

Typically, you’ll find more jacquards and brocade fabrics in Fall/Winter collections. So with many designers dabbling here and there, I had to narrow my stand-outs to a select few, including Marni. For Risso’s debut season, it was a heritage inspired 1970’s revival complete with florals and printed flares. Retro midi dresses made with colorful jacquard layers also stood out amongst the reworked vintage themes. And then there’s Alessandro Michele at Gucci, who has mastered the art of redesigned decadence. As he refuses to shy away from color, patterns and texture, the jacquard scattered throughout the collection from head to toe seems very well placed. One has to admire this all or nothing approach to design.

When it comes to shopping for jacquard items, you can find just about any piece that’s been missing from your wardrobe. Start with monochromatic faves like black and white scarf jacquard top from Cecilie Copenhagen and the polka dot asymmetric-neck dress from Marques’ Almeida. I’m also really into printed flares like these from Erdem and Miu Miu, perfect to pair with block heeled booties of your choosing. Or, embrace rich burgundy hues and brocade finishes with the double-breasted blazer from Blazé Milano and off-the-shoulder dress from Ellery. Then if you’re looking to splurge on statement outerwear, try on the Alexander McQueen fringed poncho or Etro oversized patchwork jacket.

As the weather cools down and the leaves continue to fall, the clothes get cozier. Pretty soon we’ll be bundled in wools, bountiful knits and hopefully some jacquard here and there too. Tis’ the season for textured fabrics.

Brands we love: Cecilie Copenhagen High-neck Scarf-jacquard Top, Marques’ Almeida Circle-jacquard Asymmetric-neck Dress, Erdem “Eda” Floral-jacquard Flared Trousers, Gucci Diagonal-jacquard Leggings, Dolce & Gabbana Leaf-jacquard Skinny Trousers, Etro Oversized Patchwork Jacquard Jacket, Acne Studios “Jade” Dot-jacquard Top, Miu Miu Jacquard-knit Wool-blend Flared Pants, Elizabeth and James “Whittier” Satin-jacquard Wide-leg Pants, Mother of Pearl “Bennett” Jacquard Jacket, Alexander McQueen Fringed Textured-jacquard Poncho, Ellery “Bougie” Off-the-shoulder Marble-jacquard Dress, Gucci “Jordaan” Leopard-jacquard Loafers, Blazé Milano “Tigris” Embroidered Double-breasted Blazer
