With another holiday weekend in the books, summer vacation season is still well underway. And, nothing says summer like finding the perfect pair of sunnies for a day of work or play. So when the black wayfarers just aren’t cutting it anymore, what styles do we turn to next?
To say that retro trends have been reemerging on the scene is rather apparent. But from an accessories standpoint, this season eyewear has taken on a life of it’s own. For instance, brands such as Gucci that never cease to push the boundaries of normalcy and what is truly considered over-the-top, especially in terms of size and fabrication. And, subtly channeling legendary glam-rock muses like Elton John and David Bowie make it easier and easier to justify picking up a pair jewel encrusted sunglasses. Labels such as Marni and Fendi also made waves with their colorful, oversized specs. Safe to say, subtlety is going out the window this season.
Sunglasses and shapes go hand in hand, and this summer it’s all about the cat eye. Harkening back to our love of retro this silhouette is hardly new, but with sleek versions from Gucci and Christopher Kane I’m inclined to sport some oldies but goodies. Colorful 1970s inspired tints are another retro favorite you can find in stores thanks to brands like Gentle Monster and Fendi. Or, try oblong ovals with thicker frames like tortoiseshell options from Acne Studios or all white from Saint Laurent. And for days when you’re destined to stand-out, oversized frames like the studded daisy sunglasses from Dolce & Gabbana are bound to do the trick.
Accessories such as eyewear can be somewhat of an afterthought for many shoppers, me included for a very long time. But with so many shapes, sizes and colors on the market currently, it’s hard not to consider updating your collection this season.
