Nothing says summer like nautical any and everything. I’m talking stripes narrow and wide, and if you feel so inclined from head to toe. There’s a certain whimsy to summer striping that speaks to the permanent vacation we all wish could be reality. And luckily for us, even into Pre-fall we can keep the dream alive.
Who were this season’s striped-up stand-outs? Well for me.. Monse was one of the most cohesive collections. With shirting being their strong suit, the design duo used prints, wraps and tucks to bring a welcomed freshness to their assortment. Still maintaining their uncomplicated aesthetic, Monse’s Pre-fall collection was another notable one. But there is also something to be said for the 3.1 Phillip Lim line up that was all about keeping it cool this season. Narrow horizontal stripes covered elongated layers for many of the punk inspired looks. There’s an added drama to this collection that I can really appreciate.
So with Pre-fall trickling in and markdowns in abundance, now is the time to find those hidden treasures. One brand that peaked my interest is Connolly, a 139 year old leather supplier turned English clothing label with an simple elegance one can achieve through classic tailoring. My picks of the season were the Bibi playsuit and double-breasted blazer, but you can’t really go wrong with any piece. For more muted tones, the Suit Up jumpsuit from Ace & Jig and Macha shorts from Thierry Colson are easy breezy options. I’m also very partial to pretty Carolina blue hues, making the Caroline Constas Olympia dress and A.W.A.K.E gathered wraparound top summer must haves for me. And because accessories should never be forgotten, it shouldn’t take much convincing to grab a pair of the Kerenn slides from Chloé. Never underestimate the benefits of a comfy set of slides.
Maybe it’s the constant humidity, but I can’t seem to stop dreaming of a seaside escape. I may not be putting my stripy terry beach towels to use just yet, so I’ll settle for recreating that playful palette elsewhere. And with the 4th of July right around the corner, I think I can hold on a bit longer.
