Sweltering humidity aside, NYC is all a buzz with Men’s Fashion Week in full swing. So with everyone shuffling from show to showroom all week, I was inspired to channel my more masculine side and think about reinvesting in some more proper suiting. I’m taking cues from Pre-fall 2017 and menswear street style as I rediscover my love for slim-cut suits.
Many designers introduced updated suiting in their Pre-fall 2017 collections, but Stella McCartney easily stands apart as one of the leaders of the pack. She brings Savile Row style to gritty NYC with preppy plaids and slim cuts. The elongated trousers are well paired with boxy, slightly oversized blazers to retain the same effortless aesthetic that the brand is now synonymous with. And since the latest collection from Alessandro Michele at Gucci encompassed a bit of just about everything, it only makes sense that their suiting component was equally notable. Whether it’s head to toe print, or sleek black satin, their decadent take on suiting is hard to ignore.
Now, where to find the perfect tailored set? Luckily this season coordinating pairs are reemerging on the market in various forms, slim suiting included. Lovely florals from Dolce & Gabbana and Gucci are excellent options if you’re willing to dive into print head first. Break up the print or wear all together, I’m a huge fan of both. Or, tame it down a bit with the Chloé micro-checked trouser and jacket. The burnt orange undertones emphasize the 1970s silhouette, and the large, round blazer buttons add a certain playfulness. And if you’re simply in search of the essential slim trouser, consider pieces from Alexander McQueen and Dries Van Noten if you’d like to maintain some of the irresistible artistic flair. Neutrals are also on the menu with muted tones from Stella McCartney and Calvin Klein. These elevated separates are bound to become new classics.
I’ve come to realize that whether you’re stomping the pavement or dominating the boardroom, every functioning adult is in need of at least one well-tailored suit. This time around, it’s all about the fitted look.
