Unzipped: How to.. Slip into sock boots

I know that on the heels of Labor Day weekend most of us are mourning the end of beach trips and pool days, but I’m very much looking forward to the cool down. Particularly because I’m ready to slip into boots again, and not just any boot either. I jumped on the bandwagon, and ordered a pair of sock boots and I could not be more excited to wear them everywhere.

If you’ve glanced at any blogger or celebrity fashionista’s feed over the last six months, the term ‘sock boot’ should come as no surprise. From the Kardashians to Rihanna, this trend has rapidly trickled down to the masses. We saw the first hints of this with ankle boots from Vetements and Fendi last year. For Fall 2017, several other designers are interpreting the trend and I’ve got my eye on Balenciaga and Nina Ricci. Demna Gvasalia brought his streetwear expertise to Balenciaga with thigh-high “knife” boots paired with oversized layers for the cooler months. The contrast in proportions makes these clingy spandex boots seem less and less abstract when it plays on the shape of an actual human form, as if the shoe and wearer become one. For Nina Ricci, silky feminine silhouettes called for an elegant, elongated leg and what better than a skin tight, leather boot. Models glided down the runway in her tonal collection of feminine sets with sleek, coordinating pointed-toe boots. So regardless of the fabrication, these seamless looks are bound to turn heads.

So what are we shopping? Well, it really depends on how you plan to style your look. Are you on the hunt for an over-the-knee boot to essentially eliminate the need for a long pant? If so, turn to the quintessential “knife lace” boot from Balenciaga or leather sock boot from Fendi. Both of these textured picks feature a sharp pointed-toe and fierce stiletto heel, so get ready to break out your best strut. Or, are you in the market for a versatile ankle boot instead? Lucky for us, there’s plenty to choose from in terms of heel shape and fabrication. I love knit options from Francesco Russo and Stuart Weitzman, as well as clever heel designs you’re sure to be seeing quite frequently from Vetements and Burberry. But when comfort reigns supreme and you’re seeking more practical flats, try the crocodile-effect Loewe ankle boot and Storm striped-knit boot from Givenchy. Now tell me you’re not at least a but more excited for the change in seasons.

As Carrie Bradshaw as it sounds, I really have a deep adoration for shoes. Honestly, when designers continue to innovate and reinvent must-have styles, how could one not develop a slight obsession? So with street style popping up on our radars once more, keep your eye out for the sock boots and it won’t be hard to coax yourself into adding a pair or two to your stash too.
