Unzipped: How to.. Saddle up with equestrian fall finds

Although up and down most of the Eastern seaboard it may not feel very much like Fall, pumpkin spice has exploded back on the scene and the leaves are still changing according to schedule. So in an effort get more into the autumnal spirit, I’m digging my soles into this restructured equestrian inspired trend that is perfect for the season. You can too, zero riding experience required.

There are several mainstay brands that typically dominate these stable-ready styles, but for Fall 2017 it’s all about the less obvious choices. Starting with Mulberry and their English inspired checkered looks, the overarching them seems to be oversized silhouettes. I love the masterful pairings of their leather accessories with the blazers and capes that play on the moody palette of Northern Europe. And for Stella McCartney, these equestrian undertones were delivered by including actual images of horses and landscapes throughout the collection. If anyone can make the pony sweater cool again, it’s definitely this British queen of style. Not to mention, the precise tailoring and quilted layers help translate this horseplay to the fashionable masses.

With temperatures in the US trending higher than average, there’s still time to snag some cold weather must-haves before chilly desperation sets in. Give tops a subtle update with more voluminous shapes from Mugler or J.W. Anderson. And because equestrian looks aren’t really complete without the signature stirrup pant, try on a pair of the Tibi stirrup-hem trousers for size. But if you’re seeking a more standard pant, jump into wide-leg cropped Gabardine trousers from See by Chloé. Pair these bottoms with fitted jackets from Altuzarra and Rochas, or a roomy plaid blazer courtesy of Vetements. Then last but not least, take your pick from any number of modernized riding boots like these from Saint Laurent and Aquazurra.

Growing up with savvy parents who taught me to appreciate the value and timeless refinement of equestrian styles, it only seems natural that I find each variation of this trend so accessible. But while I’ll always make room in my closet for another Ralph Lauren staple piece, there’s no denying the covetable newer options of the current season. So I don’t know about you, but I’ll definitely be saddling up for Fall.
