When it comes to style, I have always been an enthusiast of exaggerated proportions. I think the disregard for convention and rule-breaking elements of it really speak to me. Also, being slightly shorter than most at 5′ 2, it seems that I’m usually playing with proportions quite a bit to find garments that fit and look the way I want them to. So, these little legs are eager to jump on board for this wave of extra-wide-leg pants that will no doubt be sweeping their way through NYC in the coming months.
This season, multiple labels like Off-White and Acne Studios are taking on these elongated looks. For Virgil Abloh at Off-White, this was another extension of his luxe take on streetwear that we can’t get enough of. From denim to track pants, the Pre-fall 2017 collection makes perfect sense for unlikely pairings and proportions. Meanwhile, Johnny Johansson played with 70’s florals and relaxed wide-leg bottoms to bring vintage rock styling to the modern masses at Acne Studios. This collection embraces the uniqueness of prints and stripes to add character without the intensity of a brighter palette, making the tonal shift into autumnal tones much easier to do.
So, what are the super wide-leg pants to keep on your radar? It’s really a matter of fit and fabrication, as is almost everything. For work ready styles, look into pinstripes at Mugler, bold cuffs at Nina Ricci or contrast stitching from Rejina Pyo. Who says you can’t pump up the volume with your weekday routine? And because this humidity still refuses to let up, billowy lightweight fabrics remain in heavy rotation, prompting picks from Monse, Sies Marjan and Ulla Johnson. I also recommend elongated neutrals from Stella McCartney and MM6 Maison Margiela, especially if you’re in the market to invest in something that’s virtually seasonless. But if you’re simply in the mood to liven things up and stretch the boundaries of practicality, check out elastic waists with length to spare at Golden Goose Deluxe Brand and crushed velvet at Mugler and Off-White. You may not want to do too much city walking in these self-sweeping trousers, but we all fall victim to fashion at some point.
As retro becomes the now, and we start to embrace wider silhouettes once more, it seems that the age of the super-skinny pant is coming to an end. I can’t say that I’ll retire mine forever.. I mean, why deny myself any flattering silhouette while it still works in my favor? But as summer slowly turns to fall, it seems that long-standing trends must also change with the seasons. So let’s bid a warm welcome to the extra wide-leg pants we’re sure to be seeing more and more of.
