I don’t know about you, but when the temperature dips from the oppressively humid 80’s to the cool and breezy 60’s in the span of a day during late July, it takes your wardrobe and your body a minute to adjust. So before I started musing thoughts of pre-mature seasonal depression, I decided to adapt the only way I knew how, finding a way to dress for the occasion. Usher in, my newfound obsession with luxury loungewear.
Luxe leisure is nothing new, but there’s an added polish and refinement to this season’s assortment that’s making me want to jump on the trend. For instance, Alessandro at Gucci reminds us that as a set or as separates cut and color make all the difference. Layering slim track pants underneath a knee-length dress might not sound like the most accessible look, but the lookbook styling makes a strong case for the contrary. Meanwhile, Adam Lippes and Jonathan Simkhai put their modern spins on cozy luxury with reimagined sweatsuits. Their brushed silk-cashmere and off-the-shoulder sweatshirts take athleisure to all new heights.
So, while we embrace the chill a bit more and continue shopping Pre-fall, it’s even easier to wrap our heads around the idea of buying warmer layers again. I really love wide-leg options from MSGM and Emilio Pucci to pair with casual tees. And for the risk takers, consider the MM6 Maison Margiela side cut-out lounge pants for a twist on the conventional silhouette. There is a lot to choose from when it comes to tops as well, for example the Off-White round-neck sweatshirt. Streetwear brands are always a good place to start. Or, try your luck with reworked sweatshirt tops from off-the-shoulder looks at Christopher Kane to loosely ruffled asymmetry from J.W. Anderson. I could see each of these items wearing well for travel, leisure activities and whatever else the season may be bring.
Designers are simply reaffirming what we knew to be true all along, cozy is key. And with the right styling, as shown with Gucci and many others, these pieces may pleasantly surprise you.
