Unzipped: How to.. Knock around in knapsacks

Calling all city-dwellers! This one’s for you. Don’t get me wrong, having the right handbag can make or break anyone’s day, but especially if you’re juggling groceries with a 15min walk ahead of you. So once again functionality meets design, it’s officially cool to two-strap your backpack and take on the day.

In case you missed it, backpacks made a chic reemergence on runways last Fall. Now they’re on the market, and we’re free to reap the benefits. Maison Margiela introduced a convertible, structured leather version. Available in neutrals and seasonal brights, these rounded carry-alls bring a polished refinement to a school days staple. Out of the box favorite, Marc Jacobs, couldn’t resist taking a step at the trend with an embellished camouflage backpack. The clever accessibility of this piece almost guarantees it’s streetwear seal of approval for the summer. Meanwhile, Donatella Versace reworked classic camper themed elements throughout her Spring 2017 collection. So it comes as no surprise that looks were topped off with colorful and casual nylon complements. Not sure if I’d actually cozy up in a tent with one, but it’s the thought that counts right?

The question to ask yourself when purchasing a backpack this season is: practical or personal use? Luckily, there are an array of sizes and fabrications to suit whatever your needs. And probably the most exciting aspect of this trend is that menswear options can make for sleek cross-overs. For instance, how could you not fiend for the Saint Laurent fringed suede backpack or the Dolce & Gabbana pineapple-print knapsack? Safe to say, we’ve been missing out. But if you’d prefer something a bit daintier, minis from Fendi and Chloé should be right up your alley. Or feel free to explore less conventional shapes and textures with the striped woven backpack from Proenza Schouler and square KARA small textured-leather version. I’m also really digging pops of color from backpacks courtesy of Givenchy and Burberry. After all, summer is coming!

I think living in NYC gives me a special appreciation for backpacks. My black Madewell “Transport” rucksack has been a tried and true staple for the past couple of years, and I’ve only added to my collection since then. They may not be every day options for everyone, but I think we could all use at least one cool carry-all.
