It’s really beginning to seem like Spring/Summer 2016 trends are throwing it back to the good old days, and it doesn’t get more “old school” than tie-dye. It has become a tried and true testament to the heart of DIY. By combining the concepts of simplicity and uniqueness, tie-dye has become a recurring design technique for many years.
This season, designers are dipping and dying their way down the runway with an array of tie-dyed colors and styles. Synonymous with tie-dye, ikat, and everything in between, Raquel Allegra has found chic methods of incorporating this technique from head to toe. For her NYFW debut, she pulled from deep blues, muted greens and soft neutrals to create a collection of bohemian favorites that blend the traditional spirals with modern silhouettes. Baja East is another easy standout with bright, graphic prints that put an unexpected and almost unrecognizable spin on this design favorite. Models sashayed back and forth resembling birds of paradise in red silk prints with accents of blue, green and white.
If you’re anything like me, the last thing you want to do is grab a bucket, some dye and a bunch of rubber bands to create your own one of a kind pieces. So, some of my favorite shoppable picks include separates like Rachel Comey’s hand bleached jeans and tie-dye t-shirts from Roberto Cavalli’s SS16 collection. I probably wouldn’t wear them both together, but these customized staples work well with other summer classics, without making me feel like I pulled out an old arts and crafts project from the 3rd grade. If you prefer to accent your look, the Vivien Ramsay corset bra would pair nicely with a sheer solid. I’m also a big fan of the Manolo Blahnik multicolor BB pumps to add a more sophisticated pop of color to bright summer whites. I can’t help but use these colorful prints as another excuse to add some fun to my summer wardrobe.
Styles come, go and come right back around again, and tie-dye is no exception. I must admit, at first I wasn’t completely sold on the idea of bright, swirly spirals all over my clothes.. I’m not 12 years old anymore and I don’t want to be. But just like us, styles can evolve too and I’m glad this one did.
