It all started about a month ago.. I was browsing the racks in Nordstrom and spotted the suede trench dress of my dreams. This creamy cognac creation came to me courtesy of the Olivia Palermo + Chelsea28 capsule collection and sparks flew instantly. All the practicality of a sleeveless coat, with the femininity of a wrap dress and the ideal fabric selection made it a no-brainer must-have. When you think about it.. suede seems like such an obvious choice for crossover Spring looks, especially in New York where springtime often resembles the brisk chill of early Fall.
On the runway, Olivier Rousteing’s Balmain collection dominated by fusing wearable art with smooth, luxe separates. Models decked in monochromatic pairings made for Spring palette perfection. While at Courrèges, a variety of suede pieces served as add ons to ribbed, white bodysuits. Exploring this solid white base provoked the same no-fuss, attitude with caramel bombers, cropped pants and stylish minis.
Designers are whipping up newer, lighter suede pieces pulling from 60s mod styles that seriously encourage my desire to wear the fabric year round. Contemporary minimalists, like Theory and Beaufille, toy with various hues and silhouettes, making the fabric a much more wearable option. Beaufille uses sharp lines to accentuate their rust colored, cropped flares and olive calf length skirts, both ideal pairings for ribbed cotton tanks or other breathable basics. While Theory turns heads with slip dresses and tunics that stand in a league of their own. These super light, lambskin options combined with simple accessories like the Simon Miller “Bonsai” mini bucket bag and virtually any of this season’s flat sandals, and you’re ready for style steppin’ through Soho.
The suede trench dress was just the tip of the iceberg, and now I can’t get enough. With so many colors and styles to choose from, I dare you to find your perfect match too.
