Unzipped: How to.. Sneakers and Sundresses

I’ve only lived in NYC for about 7 months, and I already feel like I’ve adopted an entirely different method of dressing. I’m quickly learning that practicality is a crucial deciding factor in every aspect of my outfit choices. That being said, my curiosity with sneaker culture has now become an obsession, and I can’t get enough. I’m convinced that you can wear them with virtually anything, sundresses included.

Streetwear has always been an early indicator of upcoming trends, and the emergence of sneakers paired with dresses is a prime example. This sporty motif was mirrored in SS16 runway shows from notorious boundary pushers like Calvin Klein and Alexander Wang. Both designers chose ethereal monochromatic looks consisting of either silky slip silhouettes (Klein) or creamy ruffles (Wang) paired with rubber soled low-tops. The juxtaposition of sporty and dainty is what makes this one of those truly “love it or hate it” styling combinations. But, I see it as if they’re finally giving us permission to be our comfortable, everyday selves. So what’s not to love about that?

Several celebrities from Alicia Vikander to Rihanna are catching on to this street style fave. And the best part about it is, you can recreate the same looks from pieces you more than likely already own. Or if you’re anything like me, this is just another opportunity to buy more clothes. The individual styling is pretty simple, and similar to that of any other dress and shoe pairing. Monochromatic sets are great for keeping it subtle, while vintage frocks paired with fresh kicks add a flair of the unexpected. For instance, the Marni ruffled floral maxi and Fendi Flowerland trainers, with their similar motifs and color ways, would pair well. I also love the LemLem Alma maxi dress with the Saint Laurent Court classics for a lighter, beachy look.

Athleisure trends are making it easier and easier to merge style and comfort. So, since sneaker collaborations are on the rise and Summer sundresses aren’t going out of style, why not combine the two?
