It’s finally starting to feel like summer in the city, and my entire focus has shifted to new ways to stay cool, in every sense of the word. So aside from restocking the yearly summer essentials, like tanks, shirt-dresses and an array of easy separates, I’m left with one final dilemma: what to put on my feet? Summer after summer, I break out strappy favorites of every color. Sure, they’re super comfortable and give me another great excuse to get regular pedicures, but in the back of my mind I knew there had to be something more.. and thankfully there is. This Summer mules are sliding back into our hearts for a season of unapologetic heel baring.
The new wave of mules was a theme captured on the runway by many designers in their SS16 collections. Edun channels native Central Africa with a palette of black, white and orange hues. Along with highly praised separates, the footwear was of equal importance with graphic prints and fringy embellishments. These thoughtful details make mules much more than a simple slipper. Alessandro Michele took Gucci on a trip down memory lane with a 70s luxe take on this classic silhouette. We’re no stranger to their classic “Princeton” fur loafer mule, which they continued to showcase with a variety of eye-catching prints and studded adornments. But, I’m slightly obsessing over the “Webby” sandal with criss-cross straps.
One of the best things about wearing mules, especially during the summer months, is the versatility. They can be found in virtually any fabric, so the idea of wearing them with almost any outfit is a very real possibility. New York based brand, Brother Vellies, is helping revitalize the trend with hand crafted African styles that take pointed toes to a fierce new level.. can you say ‘babouche’? From denim to python, these slip-ons are quickly becoming a cult favorite. Throw them on with some cropped denim or dress them up with silky evening separates. Either way, they’re bound to become a wardrobe staple. Mules also allow us to embrace the block heel again, for which I’m sure your feet will thank you. The Row and Gabriela Hearst provide great work and leisure options by switching up the style of heel with different shapes and fabrications. Shoes are a great way to mix up your seasonal style, so don’t be afraid to experiment with cool prints and variations of recognizable silhouettes.
There are so many things to look forward to as we transition into Summer, and mules should definitely be one of them. If you think about it, the epitome of chic warm weather styling is quite simple: effortlessness. And nothing says it better than slide on, slide off.
