We’re on the cusp of New Year’s once more. The holiday season is coming to a close, and new beginnings are on the horizon. So as the resolution talks begin to swirl, I find myself being lead down a slightly different train of thought. What will I wear to celebrate the finale of a year filled with astonishment and moments we’re sure to remember for generations to come? I say, let the bells ring loudly and the bell sleeves prevail because 2016 was one for the books, and we’re going out swingin’.
Sure, bell sleeves are totally seventies but that doesn’t make the drama they add to your ensemble any less applicable to now. At Chloé, the bohemian vibe we’ve come to know and love reigns true throughout their Resort 2017 collection. This “hippie-chic” motif was mirrored in the super relaxed silhouettes and desert inspired palette that had me yearning for a sunny day in Palm Springs. Meanwhile for Ellery, most of the garments were finished with frills of their own and sleeve options galore. This was a welcome style blend that thoughtfully jumped back and forth, from minimalist to retro, and resulted in a collection of wearable pieces that translate easily into various aesthetics. So whatever speaks to your cool, I’m pretty sure there’s something for you here.
With less than a week until the festivities ensue, I can’t be the only one on the hunt for the perfect holiday party dress. Brandon Maxwell and Milly have simple but tasteful versions of the bell sleeve silhouette in the form of cocktail minis at either end of your budget. But who’s to say that this trend can’t transition into everyday wear? Minimalists everywhere will enjoy dresses from MICHAEL by Michael Kors and Tibi, from fit to fabrication. Tops from Adam Lippes and Giambattista Valli also serve as new basics that coordinate well with just about any bottom you already own, maybe your favorite wide-leg pant? It’s as simple as tuck and go.
As the last few days of 2016 wind down, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement as the start of a new year approaches. Maybe it’s a retained piece of childhood innocence that I’m clinging onto, but who cares? Fashion is fun, and life should be too. That being said, Happy New Year’s guys and dolls! Let’s ring it in with smiles on our faces, hope in our hearts.. and bell sleeves.
