I’ve always been a huge fan of pleating, but I can understand why they’re so difficult to wear.. mainly because width and placement are two components that are often misinterpreted by designers. This season, however, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the use of micro-pleats as a way to incorporate movement with fabrics that can easily transition into the colder months ahead.
When one thinks pleats of any kind, it’s almost impossible not to mention the likes of Issey Miyake. This designer has truly mastered the technique and reimagined it’s design possibilities time and time again. In his latest Pre-Fall collection, NASA inspired prints were splattered all over a variety of cosmic shapes and silhouettes creating wearable art that is likely years ahead of its time. More pretty pleats worth a second look came our way courtesy of Italian favorite, No. 21. Dell’Acqua’s Pre-Fall collection was thoughtful mix of utilitarianism and femininity. The silky array of fabrics blended quite well with the formal pleating of calf length skirts and other transitional separates.
But with all this talk of Pre-Fall, I have to keep reminding myself that Summer is not quite over yet. Luckily, there are some bright pleated options worth indulging in that are also weather appropriate. Stella McCartney and Altuzarra included an assortment of banded skirt selections in crisp whites and colorful hues in their SS16 collections, which are still available and now on super sale! While Missoni and Alice + Olivia helped to add a bit of glitz to your warm weather stash in the form of shimmery, hip hugging maxi skirts, all of which could easily be paired with a fresh pair of white sneaks or a simple strappy heel. But, let’s not forget the less conventional micro-pleated styles from Junya Watanabe and CO that provide top and bottom picks for an unexpected touch of cool.
Pleating is nothing new but after having a weekend of Wimbledon obsession, my interest was peaked once again. Reining champ, Serena Williams, won her 22nd title on Sunday but instead of focusing on the ridiculous #freethenipple issue, I’ve been stuck trying to convince myself that it’s ok to get a pleated Nike mini of my own. Tennis skirts are so “sporty chic”, but I don’t play the sport, which makes them virtually unattainable for me. Now I’m determined to find more creative ways to incorporate pleating into my wardrobe, and thus micro-pleats have become my fun alternative to bolder and wider folds which can create a lot of volume and the upcoming shift in seasons will no doubt be a great time to try them out. So I say.. take it to the streets and perfect your pleats!
