Season after season, there’s one trend that I and many others can never stray too far away from: minimalism. So simple, yet so necessary. But this Spring, there seems to be much more complexity to the styles gliding up and down the runway. Designers are playing with volume, shape and fabrication in this new wave of neutral hues.
When it comes to the basics of modern femininity, it’s hard not to envision ultra chic women on the streets of Paris. Jonathan Anderson at Loewe channeled a lot of those same vibes with his Spring 2017 collection of airy sleeves and fresh fabrics. The frayed hems, exposed stitching and cool palette bring even more character to the organically paired sets. Stella McCartney also used Paris as her designated backdrop for her version of tailored and textured minimalism. I don’t know if I’m more intrigued by the oversized draping or paper bag waist cinching, but the contrasts worked on a number of levels.
As we continue shopping for Spring wardrobe updates, it’s easy to gravitate towards more neutral options. Trust me, I get that, but let’s try to think a little bigger. Experiment with structural tops from Burberry and Tibi to spice up your work day look. Or, layer over a crisp button down with these tied up toppers from The Row and Victoria Beckham. For bottoms, look into billowy pleats courtesy of Chloé and Tibi. This trouser style of pant combined with pleating and wide-legs brings the best of retro tailoring with subtle contemporary changes that are hardly outdated.
So while I hibernate in my cozy, little apartment during the last official week of winter, I’ll keep my minimalist dreams alive. As much as I do love a fabulous print or eye-catching pop of color, there’s something to be said for the sheer simplicity of things. Don’t you think?
