Unzipped: How to.. Layer your jumpers

Calling all 90’s babies! Yeah, I said it once and I’ll say it again. Styles from the 1990’s are back like they never left. From chokers to oversized grunge inspired separates, the options are multiplying by the season. For Fall 2016, I’m exploring fresh and exciting layers to fight the chill. So, I’m all for bringing back school girl jumper dresses layered with knit long sleeves for work and play.

Taking a closer look at AW16 runways from earlier this year, it’s clear that this is a practical trend worth trying. Each x Other created a collection of awesome separates including multicolor jumpers and knitwear pairs. Tomas Maier also delivered with cozy knit dresses that have a warm vintage feel that’s perfect for Fall.

I love the idea of being able to wear whatever, whenever. So the thought of repurposing sleeveless styles for the colder months is truly exciting. I’m also fairly certain that as you browse the racks this season, you’ll have plenty of dress options from which to choose. Stella McCartney and House of Holland x Lee have equally cute button-up denim looks that would wear well over turtlenecks or other less bulky long sleeve knits, and did I mention they have pockets? Shift style minis are also super chic and play on a slightly more 60s mod vibe with picks from Courrèges and MSGM helping to mix business with pleasure as they bring prints to the forefront as well. In which case, I could totally see myself throwing one on with a long sleeve button-up for an afternoon at the office. Showstoppers like the Enchanted Wonderland mini by Valentino and Cher print dress from House of Holland also make quite the statement, if you dare.

So what is it about retro styles that keep us coming back for more? I can’t speak for everyone, but I’m always happy to reminisce on simpler times. Not to say that we’re not forward thinking, but there must be a reason we re-watch Clueless and secretly channel our inner Rachel Green while strolling through The Village. They must have been doing something right..
