Unzipped: How to.. Join the new romantics

Valentine’s Day was just yesterday, so for the past week it’s been a popular subject of conversation. Whether you fully indulge in this holiday or not, you’ve probably had to ask yourself at some point “What do I wear?” For me, it’s dinner with friends in the Lower East Side. I don’t want to be too thematic, but there has to be a way for 20 somethings like me to get in the spirit without being cliché.

That being said, I was reminded of certain runway shows from Spring 2017 that stood out to me as helping to redefine an era of “new romantics”. Attico is a newer label developed by street style mavens Gilda Ambrosio and Giorgia Torbini. With long, silky wrap dresses and an array of cool denim, it’s easy to see their fresh feminine aesthetic. They’re ones to watch. Meanwhile, Coach 1941 is bringing Elvis back with a pretty punk edge. Ruffles, sheer lace, leather and studs were in high demand for this slightly gothic take on florals. This dark but romantic collection speaks to streetwear lovers and I’m one of them.

With new styles starting to pour in, there’s a pretty wide selection choices and ways to interpret them. Since we’re in between snow storms, I’m definitely in the mood to find more warm layers to add to my arsenal. The Iro Oversized Jacquard Coat is great for now or later, and the print is rather alluring. Or grab velvet pants from 3×1 and the Chinti and Parker “Love” sweater for a super casual, day look. I’m also really into making shorts work year round, so the Ann Demeulemeester satin-twill pair are catching my eye. And I’m a sucker for new boots, so the “Althea” leather ankle boot with marble effect from Acne Studios is definitely calling my name.

Holiday or not, you can’t really ignore Valentine’s Day. Besides the fact that the marketing is virtually unavoidable, is there really anything wrong with showing a little extra love. At the very least, do a bit of shopping and treat yourself.
