Unzipped: How to.. Give platforms a try

Happy New Year! It’s 2017 and there’s a whole lot to look forward to over the next year. The holidays are behind us and retailers are getting geared up for the next round of shipments to come pouring in. As I began pondering fresh and innovative ways to kickstart the year, I couldn’t shake the idea that new shoes were on the horizon. So in the spirit of go-go’s and moonboots, I’m giving platforms a try.

I understand that this is just a tad bit ambitious, but for those of us who dare.. why not? On the heels of David Bowie’s untimely passing, I can easily see some of the inspiration behind this trend. For Marc Jacobs, platforms were taken to psychedelic new heights in Spring 2017. Technicolors and shiny boots were all the rage paired with equally bright minis. Other designers took a slightly less Studio 54 approach to platforms with variations from ErdemSacai. Strappy sandal versions from Erdem graced the runway with feminine maxi dresses, and Sacai added an edge with military inspired patent boots. There’s a bit of everything.

Luckily, platforms have been trickling in and out of the retail circuit, so you might not have to wait until Spring shipments hit stores to get your fix. And since it’s still very much winter, we have some more practical options to get you through the chill. For instance, the Marni platform sneakers and Axel Arigato suede sneakers are suitable options for city walking. If you’re in a furrier mood, Marc Jacobs and Fendi have clog options that would perfect with casual looks, perhaps a denim and sweater pairing? Also, Stella McCartney’s trademark platform brogues and Miu Miu raised loafers provide unexpected footwear choices that are a bit more work appropriate as we head back to the office this week.

It’s a new year, and I can feel a major shift in trends coming. 2016 was an unforgettable year, so I think we’re all in search of something new to refresh our spirits and our wardrobes. So in honor of new beginnings, let’s elevate ourselves to new heights and make 2017 another one to remember.
