Unzipped: How to.. flutter in flirty skirts

Lately, I’ve been trying to step out of my comfort zone a bit more when it comes to building my wardrobe for the season. It’s definitely easier said than done, but I’m embracing the challenge. So with the temperatures finally on the upswing, I’ve found myself gravitating toward flouncy skirts as opposed to high rise wide-legs for a change.

Like almost every other major silhouette, skirts have recently been given a street style update that’s pretty hard to ignore. I first became intrigued with the Proenza Schouler Spring 2017 where the asymmetric hemline reigned supreme. Color blocking and glittery bands are only some of the vibrant offerings that graced the runway, all of which make a strong case for lowering the hemline just a bit. But why limit ourselves to one season? Some Pre-fall collections are already hitting stores, and Alessandro Michele at Gucci is making it hard to stay away. Vintage inspired florals and embroidery continue to be an overarching theme, while technicolor hues became an even more dominant. When it comes to this collection, more really is more.

Let’s face it, pants aren’t ideal for every situation and skirts introduce a completely different set of styling options. For instance, minis from Toga and Dodo Bar Or combine print and color in a way that lends easily to either work or play. And because black options are non-negotiable when it comes to bottoms, I’ve taken a liking to clever remixes from House of Holland and Raey. These patterned neutrals help provide a lighter take on darker tones for the warmer months. Also consider knee length picks from Brock Collection and Loup Charmant and the cotton-jersey midi skirt courtesy of DKNY. Longer lengths are making a comeback, and I can’t say that’s a bad thing.

Skirts are and always will be a mainstay for many women. But, I certainly appreciate the range of shapes and silhouettes designers now offer to accommodate us all. From colors to prints, I can see skirts becoming the new focal point for style mavens everywhere.
