Well, that’s a wrap for New York fashion week. We came, we saw and we street styled our way through the city. I love seeing fellow fashion lovers bring their A-game when it comes to styling the attention grabbing looks we’ve come to expect each season. So with the temperature finally starting to drop a bit, it’s time to dig into some of the fall styles that have inspired me the most and right now, that’s purposefully undone pieces.
When it comes to street style, the key is to master the effortlessness of a look. So, these undone finishes that leave strings hanging and edges raw makes this covetable aesthetic even easier to attain. For Fall 2017, I was drawn to brands that defy conventions, and the collection at Sacai really speaks to that notion. With strategically placed rips, holes and zippers covering the garments, each piece has a worn in effect without seeming too casual. Meanwhile, the vibes at Maison Margiela spoke to a similar narrative but with a more whimsical feel. Appliquéd patches, uncut yarns, and large cut-outs that reveal more eye-popping prints help to achieve these distressed looks.
When you’re ready to add a few extras to your wardrobe, there are an array of picks to choose from. Start with basics like Art School’s oversized button-up shirt and cropped distressed jeans courtesy of Alexander Wang. Or feel free to dive into stringy knits from Acne Studios, Joseph and Sonia Rykiel. I mean, what’s fall without new knitwear? Maybe spice up your life with multicolor options from Stella McCartney and Wanda Nylon for another fun twist on the usual. And if you’re looking to add to your collection of frocks, definitely seek out contrast stitching at Alexander McQueen and Loewe.
Defying convention and taking risks is the basis of honing one’s personal style. So when designers step out of their comfort zones to challenge our ideas of garment construction, I’m definitely inclined to buy in.
