Unzipped: How to.. button up for the changing seasons

We’re entering that slow transitional period in between seasons where sleeves are encouraged and taking a look from day to night often involves adding a light jacket. It’s arguably my favorite time of the year (partially because my birthday is less than two weeks away), but mainly because it’s primetime for off-the-shoulder sweaters and other less than practical fall styles. In this case, my fixation is with button-embellished pieces. Whether purely decorative or their purpose is to adjust fit, these add-ons are quickly becoming focal points.

Heading into the colder months, many designers seized the opportunity to rethink embellishments and silhouettes. At ADEAM, a slightly gothic persona came to the forefront, bringing the palette and styling into focus. Pops of blues and burgundies break up the sea of cleverly undone neutrals, while un-buttoned sleeves and skirt panels bring the necessary cool-girl element that is sure to be hitting mood boards city wide, including mine. For Christopher Kane, the “process” for Fall 2017 included various fabric finishes and creative construction. For instance, side-fastening buttons on neutral calf-length shirt-dresses create a slimming shape while giving the wearer a slew of potential styling options.

As new season arrivals are starting to hit the racks, the selection of button-adorned pieces is growing to include something for almost any occasion. With military inspired neutrals like the Lani trench vest and Ophelia cropped pant from Marissa Webb, you can add to your workwear closet. I also love elongated silhouettes with added detail, specifically Marni’s asymmetrical vest and Victoria Beckham’s crepe midi skirt. If you’re seeking silky layers, try button-embellished sleeves from Ellery and Etro, both are seasonless must-haves. For casual classics, check out the Y/Project terry sweatshirt and Mother of Pearl Elza jeans. Just throw on either pick and style with your favorite booties as you bop around the city. Then when it comes to slightly more formal affairs, slide into knit dresses from Boutique Moschino and Preen by Thornton Bregazzi. With button detailing along the skirt and sleeves, these pieces can be worn and styled even more creatively. And I don’t know about you, but that’s music to my ears.

Now that dropping temperatures are on the horizon, it only seems fitting that we button up a bit more for the cooler months. But, that doesn’t mean we need to start layering up just yet. So, let’s leave a couple buttons undone for a moment and soak in the last of the dog days.
