I once worked with a designer who told me an outfit doesn’t feel complete without some sort of coat. I asked her if this was true even on the hottest, stickiest New York City summer day and she didn’t say no. I have never forgotten this and semi consciously have applied it to my own way of dressing. I am quite proud of my coat game and always seriously invest at the end of each fall season in the marked down varieties. Now, as the weather warms up, I still believe some sort of topper is appropriate. Obviously it’s not a coat coat and its purpose is not warmth, but rather the final thing you throw on to feel put together.
For a few years I have been on the lookout for a summer topper (as cool as they look, I just can’t do leather beyond 75 degrees). But I still want something. It can’t be too sheer, but can’t be too weighty. I want the fabric to be versatile (and practical) enough to work with shorts or a slip dress.
