Rodarte joins a long list of brands leaving NYFW for greener pastures. The brand will show its fall 2017 collection in Paris via private appointment with a spring 2018 runway show in July during couture. I have been a fan of the LA-based brand for many years, but have always, always wondered how they make any money. They launched e-commerce a couple of years ago and offer shoes and accessories, but no runway. (Full disclosure, I used to work at the PR firm that continues to rep them.) Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the two sisters who run the quirky, original, and expensive brand, are as unique as the brand itself.
Their NYFW runway show was always a showstopper, and packed with celebs and the who’s who in the industry. Each season has a specific point of view, but very little wearability outside of the red carpet, which has even waned in the last couple of years in my opinion. Although, Brie Larson looked insanely good at the Golden Globes in this. I don’t think much from each collection even gets produced; you see it literally in no stores. Collaborations, cool shoes, and the ‘Radarte’ products have kept the brand relevant and most easily accessible. With all that in mind, I think leaving NYFW, and the scene that comes with it, is a mature move for the brand. It shows evolution within the business strategy, and they’re ready to see where the brand can go in a new environment. I really wish them the best of luck.
