Interview

What made you decide to launch a line of luxury hair accessories?

At the beginning of my career, I designed hair accessories for Frédéric Fekkai, and when I left Fekkai, the buyers I worked with at Bergdorf and Bendel asked me to start a collection, and they both separately offered to buy it sight unseen. I’m fascinated by headpieces – they have such an amazing ceremonial history and feel special to me. Hair accessories are a quirky, beautiful type of jewelry for the head.

It would seem as a luxury hair accessories designer you need to stay on top of beauty, fashion and accessories trends–is this true?

Of course, yes! I really design the collection as a fashion collection that just happens to be hair accessories. I collect images and materials from everywhere. I have a new addiction to Pinterest and have been using it to organize a lot of this found imagery and inspiration.

Do you feel you have competitors in this area of the market?

We have some. Lately, brands have been putting out select items from their catwalk shows, but I don’t think there is anyone else who focuses so completely on a full collection of hair accessories that has anywhere near our quality level.

What is the price point of your headbands (accessories)?

Our hair accessories run from $60-$1200, but most fall in the $100-$300 range.

Are they handmade? Where are they manufactured?

All of our pieces are handmade from start to finish in New York City. We do all the finishing and hand-stitching in our Greenpoint studio. It’s far more expensive to do it this way but the quality and the hand-details we can do here in the studio are so important to me. I want to design pieces that can be heirlooms to pass down.

Do you have aspirations beyond hair accessories? Ready-to-wear

We have started to design select pieces of jewelry – actually because stylists started using the headwraps as necklaces…I have dreams of making lingerie once I find more time. I’ve been stockpiling materials…

You are the go-to hair accessory red carpet designer. Who are some of the celebrities and stylists you have worked with?

We work very closely with hairstylist Mark Townsend, who styles for Jennifer Lawrence, among others. Hairstylists are amazing because they take what we do and run with it. Our celebrity clients include: Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Biel, Olivia Wilde, Charlize Theron, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Amy Adams, Alexa Chung, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, the Fanning sisters, Rooney Mara, and others.

Who would like to collaborate with?

Our most recent collaboration was with Fendi — we made our dinosaur headbands for them. My dream? Valentino
