Amina Akhtar is the fashion director at the recently launched online fashin news source, Fashion Etc and former fashion editor at New York Magazine.
How has you content changed at FashionEtc since writing for NY Magazine's the cut?
Well FashionEtc and NYMag/The Cut are really different. I loved my time at The Cut. I worked with some amazing people (a lot of whom are still major parts of my life!). But FashionEtc for me is more about being in a different place in my career and life. The content and readership aren't the same (though there will certainly be some overlap). The tone is more conversational; I try to be approachable and relatable; smart, and funny. I want our readers across the country to feel like they're a part of FashionEtc.
How does it feel to be part of a new venture?
I love it! The strange thing is it doesn't feel like we're at a new venture, even though we launched just seven months ago. Everyone at FashionEtc works so hard and loves what they're doing—it's just really refreshing. And I've always wanted to work with Charla Lawhon and Susannah Cahn for years. I'm not saying I have my dream job, but I kind of do.
What is the long term goal for fashion etc?
More more more! We can only get bigger and better! We're working on our fashion week plans and bringing more news and original content to our readers.
What was your first writing gig? Did you always want to work in fashion?
Oh gosh, I can't even remember! It may have been back in Texas, where I'm from. For the El Paso Times or something! You know, truthfully, I didn't think I'd be a fashion editor. I have always loved fashion—Fashion TV and Sassy were my staples. But I wanted to get into political reporting. Then after graduating from NYU, I landed a job as an assistant at Vogue. The rest is history.
What are you featuring next?
Next up is Fashion Week!! My favorite time of the year of course. We're working on walk-up coverage, and finalizing plans for slideshows, reviews, designer profiles, and event coverage—and a couple of surprise features. So much to do for just one week!
Do you prefer accessories to ready to wear? Any new designers to keep our eyes open for?
My one true love in life would be accessories. I could look at bags, shoes, or jewelry all day and be the happiest camper in the world. That's not to say I don't love clothes but who doesn't like shiny pretty things? Right now I'm a bit obsessed with Bing Bang's evil eye collection; Mawi's jewels--as you know--are heaven on earth. Givenchy's shoes (ALWAYS), and Karl Lagerfeld glasses (in red. So very chic Sally Jesse Raphael). Though I think I may have to pick up some Prada heels too. Oh, the list goes on and on...
