The contrast this week between Amal Alamuddin in Venice and Kim Kardashian in Paris was striking on so many levels. Amal, who seems to be marrying a man she loves for all the right reasons, managed to do so fashionably. While the ceremony was uber-private, she and George allowed the public to share in their happiness and style moments. Every one of her style choices from the exquisite Oscar de la Renta wedding gown to the post-wedding Giambattista Valli haute couture dress to the bespoke Stella McCartney ensemble was smart, chic and appropriate. Even the accessories were on point. Who doesn’t love a monogrammed hatbox?
Across the country, Kim Kardashian and Kayne West attended Paris Fashion Week where they arrived late to fashion shows, dressed to impress in outfits that were either barely there, transparent, or chest baring (his and hers). For these two, everything is public including their child. Despite North’s enviable wardrobe, surely Kimye realizes she is a bit young to be attending runway shows. Does anyone wonder if talented, leading fashion designers such as Alber Elbaz, Alexander Wang, and Riccardo Tisci see through all this? Hopefully, next season they extend an invite to Amal to their shows, although she will probably be too busy fighting human rights issues to actually attend. If she did find the time for the fashion shows, one imagines she would arrive early, dressed impeccably and with the ultimate accessory: George Clooney.
