Last night were the annual CFDA Awards, or the fashion Oscars to some. The industry gets together to award designers for best menswear, best womenswear, best accessory design, among others. In recent years, or maybe in all years, it’s become a bit of a predictable night and a little boring. Raf Simons won both menswear and womenswear awards for the one and only collection he has presented for Calvin Klein so far. It was good, but there are so many deserving designers who don’t have the reach (money) that Calvin Klein has that would really, really benefit from this type of honor. That’s another post though.
The most interesting part of the night for me was seeing Meg Ryan back on the red carpet. It was an unexpected red carpet return too, and in an even more unexpected designer: Christian Siriano. No disrespect to Christian Siriano, his post-Project Runway success has been fine, and his willingness to dress the set of non-sample size women is praiseworthy. But, I’m not sure any A-List celebrity or stylist is voluntarily pulling from Christian Siriano for their events. No offense, but making the Meg Ryan/Chrisitian Siriano alignment quite puzzling. She could wear anyone – she could have made numerous different statements stepping out in Monse or Proenza Schouler or something more subtle in The Row.
I”m genuinely interested to see where this relationship goes. Maybe it was a one-time thing, or maybe it’s going to be a game changer for Christian Siriano. Stay tuned.
