If any street style star is going to get a line of her own right, it’s going to be Alexa Chung. According to her Wikipedia page she’s a British writer, host, model, and now, finally a designer. For years she’s collaborated with brands like Madewell, AG Jeans, and has a Mulberry bag named after her, but last week she debuted her first collection from her namesake line. In an interview with The Guardian she explains that she deliberately “went quite weird” and channeled her favorite style icons like Fran├žoise Hardy, David Hockney, Brian Jones, Marianne Faithfull, and the mini-cheongsam, is a special tribute to Maggie Cheung from the film In The Mood For Love. Despite Chung being known for her personal style, it seems she looked everywhere except her own closet for inspiration. And I think this is what sets the collection apart from the personalities who eventually launch their own collections; they look too much within instead of to the places and people who have defined those iconic styles. I appreciate the restraint Chung uses – either way she’s famous enough that any collection would be a bestseller. And I do really like the collection. Unfortunately, I’m going to have to wait a few more weeks to try anything on…
